Getting here

IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express fly directly from Delhi to Aurangabad (IXU). Book an airport pickup with us and skip the taxi haggling. By rail, the Sachkhand Express links New Delhi with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, but at about a day on the train, flying makes far more sense.

A four-night heritage plan

Day 1: land, pickup, sunset at Daulatabad Fort. Day 2: Ellora at opening time (the Kailasa Temple first), Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, Khuldabad. Day 3: an early start for Ajanta's 2,000-year-old murals (closed Mondays). Day 4: kayak at dawn, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki in the city. Day 5: fly home. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so plan around it.

Why stay by the lake, not in the city

Most visitors stay in the city and spend an hour each way reaching Ellora. From Hiranya you're 15 minutes away, and you come back to birdsong, a pool, a waterfall-side restaurant and a bonfire instead of traffic. When Delhi is at its coldest, October to February here is sunny and pleasant.
