In most of India, the Milky Way is a theoretical concept — something you know exists but have never actually seen with your own eyes. Light pollution from cities, towns, and highway lighting has reduced the night sky to a handful of the brightest stars across most of the subcontinent.
Khuldabad and the surrounding Ellora region represents a genuine exception. Far enough from Aurangabad city that its glow barely registers on the horizon, and with no major highway lighting in the immediate vicinity, the campground at Hiranya Resort regularly achieves sky darkness conditions that allow the Milky Way to be clearly visible to the naked eye.
THE BEST NIGHTS:
New moon nights between August and December offer the optimum combination of sky darkness and comfortable temperatures. August and September have the additional drama of monsoon storm clouds building to the west while the sky overhead remains clear — creating lightning displays on the horizon while the stars blaze above. October and November offer the clearest, darkest skies of the year.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
The Milky Way core (the bright central band) is visible as a misty river of light arching from horizon to horizon on the best nights. Individual nebulae — the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades — are visible to the naked eye. Satellite passes are frequent and easy to spot.
Our campfire area is positioned to provide an unobstructed view of the sky. On request, our team can set up a simple telescope for closer observation of planetary bodies and double stars. Guided stargazing sessions with basic constellation identification are available for groups.
