Mumbai has many weekend options. Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar get the crowds and the traffic. Alibaug fills up in an hour of rain. But 4 hours southeast on the Samruddhi Expressway, Aurangabad offers a weekend of genuine substance — two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a medieval fort within walking distance, an ancient lake, and a resort built specifically for people who want to actually recover from city life.
FRIDAY EVENING (OR SATURDAY MORNING):
Leave Mumbai after work on Friday via the Samruddhi Expressway. Drive time: approximately 4 hours to Hiranya Resort's front gate. Arrive by 9–10pm, have a late dinner, sleep in proper silence for the first time in weeks.
Alternatively, take the morning Devgiri Express train from CST on Saturday, arriving Aurangabad by noon, taxi to the resort (25 minutes).
SATURDAY:
8am: Breakfast at the resort. Observe the langur troop's morning routine from the dining area.
9am: Cycle or taxi to Ellora Caves. Spend 3–4 hours.
1pm: Return for lunch.
3pm: Optional trek to Daultabad Fort (1km) or afternoon by the pool.
6pm: Sunset from the deck.
7pm: Dinner at the waterfall-side restaurant.
Evening: Bonfire.
SUNDAY:
6am: Sunrise yoga on the lakeside lawn.
7am: Breakfast.
8:30am: Visit Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple (15 min away). Explore Khuldabad town.
11am: Check out.
Drive home via Samruddhi, arriving Mumbai by 3–4pm.
The drive on the Samruddhi is worth noting: it's one of India's finest new expressways, and the Deccan plateau it traverses — basalt landscape, endless sky — is a genuinely beautiful drive in both directions.
