The Waterfall at Hiranya Resort: When the Property Comes Alive in Monsoon

Nature & Wildlife · 2 min read

The waterfall at Hiranya Resort is one of those things that guests experience by accident and never forget. Arriving in August or early September after a heavy rain in the catchment area, visitors suddenly hear a sound they weren't expecting — the unmistakeable thunder of falling water, growing louder as they walk towards the lake-facing side of the property.

What causes it is the overflow mechanism of the 700-year-old Mombatta dam. When the reservoir behind the dam fills beyond its capacity — which happens reliably every year during the monsoon — water pours over the spillway and cascades down the hillside through the forested boundary of the resort property, eventually reaching the lower level of the lake.

The waterfall is not a gentle trickle. In a good monsoon season — and recent years have been generous — it runs as a substantial flow, with the characteristic red-brown colour of Deccan laterite soil in suspension, falling 15–20 metres through the trees with a sound that reaches every part of the resort.

The effect on the property is total transformation. The mango trees, langur troop, and surrounding forest switch from sun-baked dry-season stillness to full tropical abundance in a matter of weeks. The grass turns from brown to an intense green that seems to glow from within. The birds — more species than at any other time of year — call continuously from first light.

Our waterfall-side restaurant truly justifies its name in this season. Seated at our deck tables, you can hear the waterfall clearly and, on days when the property is quietly occupied, the combination of falling water, birdsong, and the green hills stretching to the horizon creates something very close to genuine paradise.

The monsoon season runs from late June through September. We remain open throughout and offer the full resort experience, with the caveat that outdoor activities like cycling may need to be adjusted around afternoon rain.
