A Complete Spiritual Tour of the Ellora Region: Grishneshwar, Khuldabad & More

Spirituality & Pilgrimage · 2 min read

The 30-kilometre radius around Hiranya Resort contains an almost unprecedented concentration of sacred sites from multiple religious traditions. Within an hour's drive or cycling distance, a spiritual traveller can move between Shaivite Hindu temples, Sufi dargahs, Jain tirthas, and Buddhist monasteries — a pilgrimage of extraordinary breadth.

GRISHNESHWAR JYOTIRLINGA (15 min from Hiranya): One of the 12 sacred Shiva shrines, open 5:30am–9:30pm. VIP darshan available through our front desk.

KHULDABAD — THE VALLEY OF SAINTS (20 min): This small town contains the dargahs (tombs) of numerous Sufi saints including the influential Zainuddin Shirazi. Most remarkably, Khuldabad contains the tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb — the only Mughal emperor buried in the Deccan, in a deliberately simple open-air grave as per his instructions. His tomb remains unadorned to this day.

BHADRA MARUTI, KHULDABAD (20 min): One of only three temples in India where Hanuman is depicted in a sleeping (supine) posture. The figure is enormous — over 6 metres long — and the temple is architecturally unique.

HEMADPANTHI TEMPLE, KHULDABAD (15 min): A small but exquisitely crafted medieval Hindu temple in the style associated with the Prime Minister Hemadpant of the Yadava dynasty, who standardised this form of basalt construction.

ELLORA CAVES (8km from Hiranya): Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples representing over 600 years of continuous multi-faith artistic production.

A recommended itinerary from Hiranya Resort: Begin at 5:30am at Grishneshwar for the first abhishekam, then cycle to Ellora for the 6am opening, spend the morning at the caves, visit Khuldabad's dargahs and Aurangzeb's tomb in the afternoon, and return to the resort for sunset over the lake.
