Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga: The Last of the 12 Sacred Shrines to Lord Shiva

Spirituality & Pilgrimage · 2 min read

Of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the sacred sites where Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested as a pillar of cosmic light — Grishneshwar is considered the last and, by many scholars, the most ancient. Located in Verul village near the Ellora Caves, this temple draws thousands of pilgrims daily from across the subcontinent.

The name Grishneshwar (also spelled Ghrishneshwar) is derived from 'grishna' meaning compassionate and 'ishwar' meaning God — the Compassionate God. The presiding deity is Shiva in the form of a lingam, and the Shiva Purana contains the legend of how this Jyotirlinga came into existence to honour the devotion of a woman named Kusuma, whose extraordinary bhakti (devotion) was so pure that Shiva chose this site as a permanent abode.

The current temple structure was built in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore — the same remarkable queen who also rebuilt the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi and the Somnath Temple in Gujarat. The temple is built in the Hemadpanthi architectural style, using dark basalt stone with intricate carved friezes depicting scenes from the Puranas.

Entry to the temple is free, but the atmosphere inside — with priests conducting continuous ritual, the smell of incense, flower garlands, and the sound of temple bells — is deeply immersive. The lingam is bathed in milk, honey, and water during the abhishekam (ritual bath) which takes place several times daily.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION: Temple is open 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum. There is a dress code — men should wear dhoti or pants, women should wear saree or salwar kameez covering shoulders and knees. All non-Hindus are welcome but must follow the dress code and remove footwear.

Hiranya Resort can arrange a VIP darshan (preferential queue entry) for guests on prior request — contact our front desk at least a day in advance.
