Cycling to Ellora Caves from Hiranya Resort: The 8km Route That Changes Your Perspective

Adventure & Travel · 2 min read

Our guided cycle trip to Ellora Caves has become one of the most requested activities at Hiranya Resort — and consistently one of the most positively reviewed by guests who take it. The route is 8km each way on the Ellora Road, with gentle hills and minimal traffic in the early morning, arriving at the cave complex as the gates open at 6am.

The 8km from resort to caves takes approximately 35–40 minutes on our resort cycles. The road is well surfaced for most of its length and provides good visibility in both directions. Our guide cycles at the back of the group, keeping pace with the slowest rider.

What makes this route particularly satisfying is the context it provides. The landscape between Hiranya Resort and Ellora — basalt hillocks, small farms, a few quiet villages — gives a sense of the working countryside that surrounds the cave complex. By the time you arrive at the cave entrance, having moved through that landscape under your own power, the achievement of the ancient builders feels more palpable. They didn't drive to this site; they lived in it.

The return journey is usually quicker — partly because riders have found their rhythm, and partly because the return is predominantly downhill. We arrive back at the resort by 9–9:30am, in time for a proper breakfast and a swim before the day gets hot.

Cycles are free for residential guests. Non-residential guests pay a nominal daily hire fee. The guided trip departs at 6am daily and requires advance booking (group size limited to 8 per guide). Individual cyclists may also borrow cycles and ride independently.
