The Godavari is not just a river. In Hindu tradition, it is the Dakshina Ganga — the Ganges of the South — a sacred waterway whose entire length is considered a tirtha (crossing point between the earthly and divine). The Nashik-to-Paithan section that flows within reach of Hiranya Resort has been a pilgrimage route and a trade artery for over 2,000 years.
Our kayaking experience puts you on this river at 5am — when the mist is still on the water, the egrets and herons are beginning their morning hunt, and the light is the particular luminous grey-pink of pre-dawn over flat water.
The paddling itself is not demanding. The Godavari in the section we use moves gently, and our kayaks are stable sit-on-top designs suitable for complete beginners. The guide leads, pointing out birdlife and navigating the best sections.
But the birdwatching is the real draw. The Godavari and its associated wetlands host an exceptional variety of waterfowl, waders, and kingfisher species. Dawn is when they are most active and most visible — standing on sandbars, diving from overhanging branches, crossing the water in low-level flight. Photographers consistently rate this experience as producing the best wildlife images of their entire trip.
The session runs from 5am to 8am, including transport to and from the river, equipment, guide, and a light breakfast on return to the resort. Minimum age 12 years. Advance booking essential — limited places per session to preserve the tranquility of the experience.
