Fishing at Daulatabad Lake: A Meditative Afternoon on an Ancient Reservoir

Adventure & Travel · 2 min read

Fishing at Daulatabad Lake is not primarily about catching fish, though that does happen. It is about the particular quality of silence that settles over a person who sits at the edge of still water with a rod in hand, with nothing to do and nowhere to be.

The lake is a reservoir held by the 700-year-old Mombatta dam — a body of water that has sustained communities and wildlife for centuries. Today it is home to rohu, catla, and a variety of local freshwater species that respond well to the simple bait and tackle we provide.

The fishing area along the resort's lakeside boundary is accessible to all guests. We provide rods, line, hooks, and bait — no experience required. A brief orientation from our staff shows beginners the basics of casting and bait selection.

The best fishing is in the early morning (6–9am) and late afternoon (3–6pm) when fish are most active near the surface. Midday sessions are also possible but less productive.

The experience is enhanced, rather than diminished, by the surrounding landscape. The fort above, the birds on the water, the occasional langur watching from the bank with apparent curiosity — it is a fishing spot unlike anything available within many hours of Mumbai or Pune, and one that guests with young children in particular find genuinely magical. A child catching their first fish, in this setting, is a memory that tends to stick.

Equipment is provided at no additional charge to residential guests. Non-residential walk-in guests pay a nominal activity fee.
