The conventional wisdom in Aurangabad travel guides is to stay in the city and take a day trip to Ellora. This is wrong — and we say this not simply as a resort near the caves, but because the logic of the trip demands proximity.
The best Ellora experience requires being at the cave gates when they open at 6am. From Aurangabad city (30km), that means leaving by 5am. From Hiranya Resort (8km), that means leaving at 5:30am — or, better, cycling there. The early morning makes an enormous difference to both the experience and the photography.

NEAR THE CAVES (Khuldabad/Ellora Road):
Hiranya Nature Retreat — 14-acre lakeside nature resort, 8km from Ellora, 1km from Daultabad Fort. Swiss tents, rooms, cottages, camping, pool, restaurant, bar. The only full-service nature resort in the immediate Ellora area. Contact for current availability and rates.
MTDC Holiday Resort Ellora — Basic government-run property near the cave entrance. Limited facilities, functional accommodation.
IN AURANGABAD CITY (30km from Ellora):
The Taj Aurangabad, Welcomhotel Rama International, and various business hotels serve travellers who prioritise city amenities over proximity to the sites. Suitable for business travellers, less ideal for heritage tourism.
OUR RECOMMENDATION:
Stay near the caves. The extra distance from city amenities is irrelevant — everything you need for a Ellora-focused trip is either at Hiranya Resort or within 15 minutes of it. The city's restaurants, shopping, and other historical sites (Bibi Ka Maqbara, Panchakki) are an easy day trip from the resort.
