Yes, Ellora works well as a long weekend from Bengaluru. IndiGo flies direct from Bengaluru to Aurangabad airport (IXU) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a flight of roughly two hours, and the caves are about 40 minutes from the airport. With three days on the ground you can see Ellora properly, add Daulatabad Fort and Grishneshwar, and still have time for Ajanta or a slow day by the lake.
Booking the flight
The direct route is operated by IndiGo, and timings shift between seasons, so check the current schedule before fixing your plans. What matters most is arrival time. A morning or midday landing gives you a usable first afternoon; a late-evening arrival means your first real day starts the next morning, and you may want to add a night.
For the return, an afternoon or evening departure lets you fit in one last sight on the final morning. If the direct flight does not suit your dates, connections via Mumbai or Hyderabad are an option, though they eat into a short trip.
Mind the closed days
Long weekends in India usually mean Saturday to Monday or Friday to Sunday, and this is where many visitors get caught out. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays and Ajanta on Mondays.
- Friday to Sunday: no clash at all. Do Ellora on Saturday and Ajanta on Sunday, or the reverse.
- Saturday to Monday: do Ajanta on Sunday at the latest. Monday is fine for Ellora, Daulatabad Fort and Grishneshwar.
- Sunday to Tuesday: see Ajanta on Sunday and Ellora on Monday; keep Tuesday for the fort, Khuldabad or the city.
A three-day plan
Day 1 is for arriving and adjusting. Drive out towards Daulatabad, have lunch, and rest through the hottest part of the day. In the late afternoon, climb part of Daulatabad Fort or simply watch it catch the evening light across the water. An early night sets you up for tomorrow.
Day 2 belongs to Ellora. Arrive close to opening time, start at the Kailasa temple (Cave 16) before the crowds build, then walk south to the Buddhist caves, including Cave 10 with its ribbed ceiling. If you have energy left, take the road north to the Jain caves, which are quieter and exquisitely carved. After lunch, Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is only a few minutes away, and Khuldabad's Sufi shrines are a short drive uphill.
Day 3 has two good options. If you have a full day, go to Ajanta, roughly two and a half hours each way, and give the painted caves at least three hours. If you fly out in the afternoon, keep it closer: climb Daulatabad Fort at first light, visit the handmade paper workshops at Kagzipura, and head to the airport after lunch.
Weather: what Bengaluru travellers should expect
Bengaluru's gentle climate can make the Deccan feel like a shock. From March to early June, days are hot and dry, and the rock of the caves and fort radiates heat by midday. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early mornings and late afternoons, and carry more water than you think you need.
The monsoon, roughly July to September, turns the land green and brings the seasonal waterfalls at Ellora and Ajanta to life, though the rain can be heavy on some days. October to February is the most comfortable window, with warm days and cool, sometimes chilly nights in December and January. Pack a light jacket for those evenings.
Getting around
There is no need to rent a self-drive car. Most visitors hire a car with a driver for the day, which is simple to arrange locally and removes the stress of parking at busy sites. App-based cabs work within the city, but are less reliable for return trips from Ellora or Ajanta, so book a driver for those days.
A good local guide at Ellora is well worth it. The site is large, and a guide will steer you to the details, stories and quieter corners you would otherwise walk past.
Where to base yourself
For a short trip, staying near Daulatabad rather than in the city centre saves real time. From here, Ellora is about 15 minutes away, Grishneshwar about 15 minutes, and the airport about 35 to 40 minutes, so your mornings start at the caves rather than in traffic.
Hiranya is a family-run nature retreat on the banks of the 700-year-old Mombatta Lake, 1 km from Daulatabad Fort, with airport pickup and guided Ellora and Ajanta tours available on request.
