Slow Travel & Adventure: Off-Road Biking Through Maharashtra’s Countryside with Hiranya Resorts

My day at Hiranya Resorts started with the kind of excitement that only a big adventure can promise. The monsoon had just washed the countryside clean, leaving the hills surrounding the resort lush and vibrant. The early morning air felt sharp, and even before breakfast, it was clear that the day was going to be something out of the ordinary.

What really set this experience apart was that the owner himself, an enthusiastic biker, decided to join us for the ride. With him leading, the mood was instantly relaxed yet full of anticipation—we were in expert company. The resort provided us with two Hero Xpulse 200 dirt bikes, perfect for the rough-and-ready trails around the area. Their lightweight build and responsive handling made them feel made for this part of Maharashtra.

After a quick ten-minute ride from the resort, our group reached the first off-road trail. The transition was sudden. One moment, we were cruising on a paved road; the next, we were carving our way through deeply green meadows and heading towards small, almost hidden villages. These places seemed untouched by time—just a handful of villagers tending buffalo, while small homes built of stone and mud walls clustered together at the edge of the hills.

Riding through these villages and open fields, I felt a wave of nostalgia. The countryside reminded me of the spontaneous cycling adventures I had as a kid—wandering without maps or plans, just exploring and riding for the pure joy of it. Here, grown up and on a dirt bike, the feeling was the same. The difference was only the scenery—greener, wilder, and far grander than any backyard I’d ever cycled through.

The real excitement began as we started to climb up the hills. The trails grew challenging—loose stones, patches of mud from the monsoon, and a steep incline that demanded all our attention and skill. There were moments when we had to stop, catch our breath, and plan the next move together. Making it up that slope was equal parts tough and thrilling. By the time we reached the top, our bikes and clothes were streaked with mud and our faces with big, goofy grins.

At the crest, the view was genuinely stunning. Spread out beneath us was a dramatic landscape—meadows, ancient villages, and, standing out on the distant horizon, the mighty Daulatabad Fort. Seeing it from above made me pause and wonder about the history here—how many rulers and armies had once stood on these same hills, planning their campaigns. Right next to that, the modern Samruddhi Highway sliced through the plains, a reminder of how the world keeps changing, even in a place this timeless.

We spent time at the top, capturing photos, soaking in the sights, and even laying out a short dirt track so we could race each other on the mountain’s edge. The competitive spirit was contagious, and before we knew it, the sky had started to darken. Rain began to fall in earnest—not heavy, but enough to coat the trails with a fresh layer of challenge.

The ride back was its own kind of adventure. We navigated slippery paths and riverlets of mud, laughing more at every near slip and slide. The hillside echoed with our shouts and the hum of engines, and each splash added to the day’s story. By the time we returned to the resort, we were soaked, muddy, and absolutely satisfied—a perfect mix of exhaustion and happiness.

What impressed me most was how the whole experience brought me back to simpler times. It wasn’t just off-roading; it was that pure, childhood joy of discovery—going wherever the trail led, with no agenda, just the thrill of fresh air, friendship, and finding something unexpectedly beautiful.
